Our Programs

We offer dynamic student-centred programs with personalised learning activities that facilitate social and emotional development. We aim to engender a sense of wellbeing and build children’s confidence to effectively engage with others as they prepare to transition to primary school education.

Our programs aim to be inclusive and are driven by the interests of our students. Children are active participants and decision makers in their learning experiences. We value communicating and working in partnership with parents so that we, as educators, can link children’s experiences at home with their learning at kindergarten.

At Elsa MacLeod Kindergarten, we seek to foster effective learning skills in each child by offering a range of activities that recognise and celebrate the diversity of learners and learning styles.

We implement integrated teaching and learning approaches within clear daily routines, which incorporate child-directed play and learning, guided play and learning, and adult-led learning.

Learning activities are designed to provide fun and engaging opportunities to extend and develop literacy, numeracy, creativity, communication, conceptual understanding, fine motor skills and physical coordination.

Children engage in a range of play-based activities, such as:

  • art

  • music

  • dance and movement

  • sports

  • drama and role-play
  • sensory journeys
  • science experiments
  • inquiry-based projects

MUSIC

Elsa MacLeod Kindergarten extends and enriches the educational experience of students by offering a music program in Terms 3 and 4. Our specialist music teacher leads this program, which culminates in an annual concert at the end of the year.

LANGUAGES

In recognising that children are rapidly learning to become effective communicators through exploring language, we offer a language program through which students learn some Auslan signs as well as vocabulary from our local indigenous language, Gunditjmara.

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

Elsa MacLeod Kindergarten seeks to provide children with opportunities to make meaningful connections within their local community. We make annual visits to the Portland Fire Station and attend special events at various local primary schools. We also enjoy visits from our local ambulance service and pet owners.

TRANSITION TO PRIMARY SCHOOL

Elsa MacLeod Kindergarten aims to support children and families in making the transition to school an exciting and positive experience. Our programs aim to foster independence, confidence in making connections and a lifelong love of learning. We work closely with all schools within the Glenelg Shire to facilitate a smooth transition to primary school for each child.
